Description: Child prodigy concert violinist Patricia Travers performing an arrangement of Rubinstein's Romance. This scene is taken from the movie "There's Magic in Music", which was made in 1940. The girl seated at the piano (background)is future actress Diana Lynn (then 14 year old Dolly Loehr) and the singer (piano foreground) is 15 year old Kaye Connor. The violinist in the background right is Dortohy Wade, and the oboist in the background center is Miriam Nadel-Karn. The young cellist sitting next to Travers is Mary Louise Zeyen, who went on to be a nun, "moonlighting" for many years as a cellist in the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Others you can see at various points during the clip include Virginia Ellis, Edwina Pierce, Annette Rudermann, and Shirley Cornell. The movie is the only one Travers appeared in, and this is the only known video footage of her performing on violin. Travers, who was a regular on the concert circuit from 1938 (age 9), retired from concertizing in 1951 at the age of 23 to help her parents with their extensive business interests. She never returned. Patricia Travers is no relation to contemporary musician Pat Travers. The instrument Travers is playing is the Guarnerius Ex Console. Travers also owned the "Tom Taylor" Stradivarius, which Joshua Bell used for some time. Travers was also a coloratura, and her violin concerts sometimes included a surprise encore aria. YouTube moderators: the movie that this clip comes from is known to be in the public domain for almost 40 years. |

GMMesmerize ::: Favorites 2008-01-02 12:37:04 This video depicts an *actual* child prodigy, and I thank you for providing us with such clip. Although I can tell a large amount of her humanity has been compromised to achieve such art, It was worth it to hear such this piece played so expressively. And she's hot. __________________________________________________

EmilyLiz ::: Favorites 2007-12-17 11:12:41 I think maybe part of what you're hearing as nervousness is the recording technology of the day combined with the style of playing common in the mid twentieth-century. :) I think she sounds marvelously in control. __________________________________________________
