Description:

I'd like to offer my personal thanks to Upper Peninsula representatives Tom Casperson Mike Lahti Steve Lindberg Gary McDowell And Upper Peninsula Senator Mike Prusi For being brave enough to vote in favor of increasing Michigan's income tax by less than one half of one percent back in September. No one likes a tax increase, but they were all smart enough to realize that when economic times are hard -- the state needs to provide more services and cuts are only going to do so much. The Michigan Taxpayers Alliance is now trying to bully some of the people who Michigan voters sent down to Lansing. They're trying recall petitions and some other truly tawdry stunts. They have a 12-foot tall papier-mâché pig that they've called "Mr. Perks." "Mr. Perks" apparently gets paraded around the districts of anyone who's brave enough to say that if the state is to provide services -- the state needs revenue. I don't think our representatives up here need to worry about the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance or their silly homecoming parade float. That thing wouldn't last two days in this weather. Mr. Perks really is the perfect symbol for the Michigan Taxpayers Alliance. It's intimidating when you first see it, but when you take a closer look -- you realize it's cheap, flimsy and hollow.
