The United States is worth what is owed; otherwise, our creditors will never see their profit. On contrary, in corporate america, your worth is your assets less liabilities and your value is in your profits. In American government, you have no profits.

808Surf, I hear what your saying, but check some of the dire comments made by David Walker (Chief US Comptroller, GAO). He says we got trouble ahead. The government debt is referred to as Public debt, if we don't maintain productivity, we won't meet creditor expectations. The debt is paid by income taxes, the debt erodes savings of public (or at least potential to).

hehe absolutely! funny tho how some of our leaders seem to think that way though...or at least act like they do believe in the great moneytree :-P Your right about SS tho. If nothing is done, then I'm SOL. At the VERY least we should put it all in a "lockbox." thank you Al Gore...

Most Americans are unaware of the serious issues facing our country. We're taught in school that we are the greatest nation in the world. The words aren't there, but the sentiment is. I'm 20, I've been out of public education for two years. Public education by its nature teaches the status quo. So most people believe the status quo.

While it's wrong that so many of us are deluded by our assumptions, lets not be dicks to those who are willing to ask questions. She didn't spew black oozing liberal guilt at us. She asked a question, apparently *gasp!*, to hear our answer so that she may better understand us.

In her defense, I have to admit at her age I didn't know squat about economics. I remember the 70's gas lines, and NYC going broke (literally)..and that sort of gave an intuitive sense that "something ain't right". Now, she has been given direction by all of us to research the economic issues. Recommend she checks what David Walker the US comptroller General has to say.
