I also am a big fan of Arrau, especial in chopin, I do not realy like his liszt, I think you have to play liszt with "fire", sometimes I have difficulties to stay awake with arrau and liszt... but you like cziffra in liszt, or you like him not... I personally like the freedom he takes in his interpretation... I think arrau in the fourth ballade of chopin is one of the best interpretation's for the moment...

Ok, ok... I never denied his skill etc etc... but Liszt wrote on this piece "Allegro agitato molto". However, for e.g., Arrau is as expressive as Cziffra (in my opinion), but he played this piece in 4.45. I love him... Then Cziffra never stay at tempo... slow.. rush... Anyway, he was one of the best pianist ever lived, sure! (After Arrau)

he played the transcendental etudes not as etudes, but as real concert-pieces. I saw him play this piece 4 times live, it was always another interpretation... like he wrote it himself...

I love Cziffra except on this piece precisely (it is the same on record). I never understood why he plays this study so slow and as a nocturne. In this respect the end is inadequately fast compared to the rest of the study.

The question is...Is it expressive? If it is... then great!...if not,who cares what it resembles! As to these conversations about Liszt's playing, stop guessing.Listen to his 2nd favorite Eugen D'Albert play it."His 1st favorite,Karl Tausig, died unrecorded."Then you'll know...whether or not you like it is another story.
