Formal identification of the crash victims is not expected until mid-morning on September 16th at the earliest[2], however McRae is known to be a keen helicopter pilot, and his agent Jean-Éric Freudiger has stated that McRae was piloting the helicopter at the time of the crash and that McRae and his five-year-old son Johnny were killed in the crash, in which Strathclyde police confirm there were no survivors. Also on board were believed to be another adult - a school friend of McRae - and another child.
