Just in response to philmoscowitz's comment; the reason more damage would seem to be done to some non-contact tournaments is because its generally lighter fighters relying on speed. If you combine a well timed technique to a fighter that has not had correct conditioning especially if they are off balance due to bouncing/springing as they get hit, you have a good chance of causing an injury.

Well for example, in POINT SYSTEM (which is TOTALLY different) the moves are based on SPEED. Whereas our style is focused on POWER. Pretty jumping, flying, spinning, fancy kicks are only for the movies and don't do much "damage". Our style is not meant to look pretty and takes MUCH stamina when you strike your opponent. If you fight full contact you would understand. You just can NOT be a Jean Claude Van Damme and expect to be a world champion in Japanes Karate

why are their techniques so weak? they're making contact but don't seem to be doing much damage. i've seen more damage done in karate tournaments when the combatants are trying NOT to make full contact. maybe they're all off-target glancing blows?
